Belur's floating pillar

The pillar on its plinth

At the Belur temple a 48-foot pillar, made of a single stone, was set up about 900 years ago. It has no foundation and is simply placed on a raised plinth. Part of it does not touch the ground: a sheet of paper or cloth can be passed under it from one side.

Inside, look for Hanuman ji, whose jewellery is carved in fine detail, and outside, a super-fine carving of Garuda, Lord Vishnu's vahan, standing in the open and facing the sanctum of Lord Vishnu.
