The Vedas were not written down but held in memory, and Lord Brahma, their creator, once forgot them. Lord Shiva advised him to pray on the banks of the Yamuna. After long prayer the Vedas, also called the Nigam, returned to him: "Nigam ka bodh ho gaya".

A Shiva temple was raised on the spot with a cremation ground downstream. The temple was later demolished, but Nigam Bodh Ghat is still in use today, making this the oldest and holiest place in Delhi.
