Rock-cut caves, Mahabalipuram

Durga fights Mahishasur across a single wall of rock

Mahishasur Mardini

In the caves at Mahabalipuram, a single rock face carries Mahishasur Mardini: Maa Durga fighting the buffalo demon Mahishasur. It is 1,500 years old and was cut with the tools of that time.

Another cave made by the Pallava kings shows Gaja Lakshmi seated on a lotus, with elephants on both sides. The caves were damaged by invaders, but what remains is proof of our history, to be preserved for the generations to come.
