The 16th-century Veerabhadra Temple at Lepakshi has 70 pillars, but one hangs from the ceiling and barely touches the floor. Visitors pass paper or cloth right under it.
Why it hangs is still a mystery.
Lepakshi means "Rise, bird": the words Lord Ram spoke when he found the wounded Jatayu here, after Jatayu tried to save Sita ji from Ravan, and that led to Jatayu's moksha. Look also for the 16th-century Nagalinga, a Shiva lingam shaded by a seven-headed serpent, carved from a single stone, and for the great Nandi opposite the temple, one of the largest in Bharat, also cut from a single stone.
