Konark Sun Temple

A stone chariot that keeps time to the minute

The wheel as a clock
The wheel as a clock

Konark joins kona, corner, and arka, the Sun. Built about 750 years ago as the Sun's chariot, it has 7 horses for the days of the week and 24 wheels for the hours of the day. Two wheels are sundials: one for sunrise to noon and one for noon to sunset.

Each wheel has 8 broad and 8 thin spokes. Two broad spokes mark 3 hours (one pahar); a broad and a thin spoke, 90 minutes. Thirty beads around the rim each mark 3 minutes. Hold a finger at the centre and the shadow on the beads gives the time, accurate to about a minute, and it still works.
