Bhool Bhulaiyan, Mehrauli

A tomb built for a traitor, easy to enter and hard to leave

A bhool bhulaiyan is a building with a simple entrance and a difficult exit: it has many false exits, most of them leading to dead ends. Delhi's Bhool Bhulaiyan is the octagonal tomb of Adham Khan, Emperor Akbar's foster brother and son of Maham Anga, one of Akbar's two wet nurses.

Adham Khan, a general, was jealous of Ataga Khan, the husband of Akbar's other wet nurse Jiji Anga, whom Akbar treated as a foster father and made his minister. On 16 May 1562 Adham Khan killed Ataga Khan in the Diwan-e-Aam of Agra Fort. Akbar ordered him thrown from the fort wall; he was thrown twice and died the same day. His body was brought to Mehrauli and this tomb was built over it. His mother came to Delhi for 40 days of mourning and died on the 40th day, 25 June 1562.
